Referral Request Templates

Two short messages for when you’re ready to ask for a referral or a job lead. Use them when you have a specific role or need in mind.

Asking for a referral to a specific role

I saw the opening for [role] and think my experience in [relevant area] could be a good fit. Would you feel comfortable referring me, or suggesting the best way to apply?

Asking a senior person about openings

I’m looking for opportunities in [field]. My experience in [specific work] is relevant to [team need]. Do you know of any teams that are hiring, or anyone you would recommend speaking with?

When to use it

  • Use the first message when you know the person fairly well and a related role is open, or when a deadline is close and there’s no time to build a relationship over months. Name the role and why you fit.
  • Use the second when you’re close to graduating or have graduated and are reaching out to hiring managers or senior people. Be ready to explain what you can bring.
  • Ask for a referral only if company rules allow it.
  • Referrals don’t work the same way everywhere. In the campus recruiting I know at some banks, consulting firms, and Big Four firms, a regular employee’s referral doesn’t play the role it does in experienced hiring.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a twenty-minute chat as a promise to refer you.
  • Saying only “I’m very eager to learn.” She still won’t know whether she has a suitable opportunity for you.
  • Pretending you’re just exploring when you need a job soon.
  • Borrowing ideas you don’t understand yet to sound professional.
